Anthracite Grey Composite Fencing

Anthracite grey continues to be one of the most in-demand colour choices across our composite fencing range.

While darker browns and blacks are gaining momentum, anthracite remains a firm favourite for customers building a contemporary garden boundary. We offer it across several styles, including woodgrain, reversible smooth and grooved, and slatted designs.

But there is one specific thing we recommend before buying any anthracite fencing: order a sample first. Anthracite might sound like a standard, universal colour, but the actual shade differs considerably between products and manufacturers.

Here is what you need to know before you order.

What Colour Is Anthracite Grey Fencing?

Anthracite is a deep, dark grey. However, not every anthracite composite product looks exactly the same.

Depending on the specific composite formulation and surface treatment, you will find shades that appear lighter, darker, or have noticeably different undertones. Some carry a cooler, slightly blue-grey tint, while others sit much closer to a flat, deep charcoal.

Do not rely solely on a colour name or a photograph on a phone screen. We created our guide to composite fencing colours to help customers choose the right shade for their garden and surrounding landscape. However, if achieving a close colour match is important to you, we always recommend ordering a physical sample and comparing it directly with the materials already around your home.

Smooth and Grooved Anthracite Fencing

Our reversible smooth and grooved fencing offer two distinct finishes. The smooth side provides a minimalist, understated look, while the grooved side introduces sharp lines and texture. Anthracite works incredibly well with grooved boards because the dark colour heavily emphasizes the shadows cast by the grooves.

Anthracite Grey Woodgrain Fencing

If you want a dark contemporary colour without losing the character of timber, woodgrain fencing is the clear choice. The embossed pattern introduces texture across the surface, breaking up what would otherwise be a massive, flat block of dark grey. It looks distinctively modern, but retains the natural feel of real wood.

Anthracite Grey Slatted Fencing

For a highly architectural finish, we offer anthracite within our slatted fencing range. Slatted designs naturally look modern; combining them with a dark charcoal finish pushes the boundary further into contemporary territory. This pairs exceptionally well with clean lines, porcelain paving, and modern outdoor furniture.

Matching Fencing with Windows and Doors

Customers consistently tell us they choose anthracite fencing to coordinate with the exterior of their property.

Carrying the colour of your window frames and bi-fold doors into the garden connects the landscaping with the house. If you’re planning to carry the same anthracite grey tones through the rest of your garden, anthracite composite decking can be paired with your fencing to create a coordinated finish. However, we urge caution when trying to achieve a 100% exact colour match.

An anthracite composite fence will not look completely identical to a powder-coated anthracite aluminium door frame. The different materials, textures, and lighting conditions will make them look slightly different. If matching is your primary goal, hold a fencing sample directly against your door frame in natural daylight.

Please Note:

Order Your Free Samples: We highly recommend ordering our free samples to confirm the colours before placing an order, as digital photos can vary significantly between screens.

Kit Setup: Our kits are based on having existing concrete posts and a 300 mm gravel board. Example: 6 ft fence boards cover 1.5 m, and the existing gravel board provides the remaining 300 mm, creating a finished 6 ft result.

Fence Slats: Fence boards are 1.83 m in length to ensure all existing concrete post widths are covered. Cutting may be required to fit on occasion.

Key Benefits of Our Anthracite Grey Fencing

  • icon
    A Modern, Contemporary Aesthetic

It provides a sharp, architectural boundary that grounds your garden perimeter without the heavy maintenance of painted timber.

  • icon
    Blends with Windows and Doors

A major trend in landscape design is matching outdoor materials with anthracite bi-folding doors and window frames. Using anthracite fencing visually connects the garden to the house. (Note: Shades vary between suppliers, so always check physical samples).

  • icon
    Strong Colour Consistency

Darker composite colours generally hide UV weathering and retain their strong, consistent finish better than very light greys, making anthracite a smart choice for exposed, south-facing gardens.

  • icon
    Contrasts with Greenery

A dark boundary acts as a striking backdrop. It makes natural green plants and vibrant foliage stand out, turning your landscaping into the focal point rather than the fence itself.

Expert Advice On Anthracite Grey Fencing

Want to know more? Our in-house expert, Allan, gives his take on this product, and we’ve selected some of our best guides to help you decide if this is the right choice for you.

A Word from Our Expert, Allan:

Our anthracite grey composite fencing is available in a range of dark grey and anthracite tones. From our experience in the market, we know many customers want their fencing to coordinate with existing garden features such as windows, doors and other exterior finishes, so each range has been developed with slightly different anthracite tones in mind.

If achieving a close colour match is important for your project, I always recommend ordering a sample before you buy, as shades can look different depending on the product finish and lighting conditions.

Anthracite grey remains one of the strongest choices for creating a modern, contemporary garden. We have also seen how well these darker tones perform visually across our composite decking ranges, which has helped shape the colour direction of our fencing collection.”

FAQ About Our Anthracite Composite Fencing

1 Does Anthracite Fencing Work With Concrete Posts?

Yes, and it creates a highly effective visual contrast.

Installing dark anthracite boards between lighter concrete posts turns the structural posts into part of the design, breaking up the perimeter so it doesn’t feel like one continuous, heavy wall. More importantly, if you already have sturdy concrete posts installed, installing composite fencing is simple, composite fence boards can slot straight into them saves you the heavy labour and financial cost of digging them out.

2 What Colours Go With Anthracite Grey Fencing?

You do not need to make your entire garden dark. Introducing lighter materials creates vital contrast.

Anthracite fencing looks striking alongside mid- or light-grey porcelain paving. The lighter floor prevents the garden from feeling boxed in, while the dark fence defines the boundary. Black architectural features—like pergolas or furniture frames—also pair well if you want a strictly monochromatic, modern design.

3 Does Anthracite Grey Composite Fencing Fade?

You should expect some initial colour shift with any exterior wood-plastic composite product as it weathers.

While anthracite retains a strong, dark appearance much better than pale greys, it will still experience slight UV lightening during the first few weeks of exposure. The colour typically stabilises after 3-6months. If colour retention is critical, review our enhancements to colour consistency on fade rather than false industry claims that composites never fade.

4 Does It Show Marks and Scratches?

Darker, textured woodgrain surfaces often hide minor scuffs better than pale, flat surfaces. However, dark colours are not immune to dirt. Dust, dried rain spots, and light-coloured mud will show up against anthracite.

The practical advantage here is location: unlike composite decking, a vertical fence does not endure foot traffic, dragging chairs, or heavy abrasion, so scratching is rarely an issue.

5 Does Anthracite Fencing Get Hot?

Yes. Dark colours absorb solar energy, meaning anthracite composite fencing will become warm—or even hot—in direct summer sunlight. Because it is a fence, this is rarely a practical issue since you are not walking barefoot on it. But it is worth noting if you plan to install it right next to a tight seating area in a south-facing sun trap.

6 Why You Must Order a Sample

Ordering a sample is the single most important step you can take before buying your fence.

Because anthracite varies drastically depending on the lighting and manufacturing batch, a physical sample lets you:

  • See exactly how dark the charcoal is in person.
  • Identify any subtle blue or brown undertones.
  • Feel the depth of the woodgrain or slatted finish.
  • Hold it directly against your bi-fold doors and existing paving.
  • Watch how the colour shifts between harsh midday sun and evening shade.

Do not gamble your budget on how a colour looks on a computer screen. Get the sample in your hands, take it out into your garden, and you will instantly know if it is the right anthracite for your home.
