Composite Joists

Ultra-Decking focuses on quality joists; all our composite Joists use the highest quality materials & come in a solid profile finish, creating increased strength & durability to ensure your joists don’t fail over the years of use.

Composite Lumber is a fantastic solution to timber lumber due to its strength, durability & longevity, not to mention an eco-friendly solution helping to reduce plastic waste in landfills & the sea.

Using Composite Joist is most certainly an investment for its longevity and should be considered for this reason. Our advice is to ask yourself the question of how long you want the decking frame down for.

If planning to replace the decking in the next 10 to 15 years, if the answer is no, composite joists are worth the investment for your home improvement project as they will outlast its timber cousin, providing a cost-effective investment during their years of service.

Composite Posts

Composite Posts are an alternative solution to timber posts. In our experience, they are a great solution to be used with both composite and wooden joists.

When used with wooden joists and raised from ground level, they have added benefits due to the highly minimal water & moisture absorption, helping in theory to prolong your timber joists life span.

As stated above, composite joists are an investment for use with timber or composite decking. They enable you to provide a mix of lower upfront costs and help to prolong your frames life span. Using composite posts and wooden joists can look extremely attractive on costs & life span combined with their low water absorption.

3mm Hidden Fasteners

3mm, often referred to as slim clips or hidden fasteners, are the most popular clips of choice with the grooved composite decking system. The reason for their popularity is the overall appearance they provide on a finished project. The 3mm clips enable you to leave a smaller gap side to side than the plastic or 6mm clip providing a more natural & modern look on the completed composite decking project. What isn’t mentioned by many fitters or manufacturers is the minor drawback of doing this. In our experience, three fundamental points must be paid close attention to during the installation using this type of clip or fastener.

  • The clips enables a 3mm gap, but that does not mean it automatically leaves this gap, as it should be regularly checked as you progress the decking installation. In the main due to the expansion and contraction of the composite decking boards that can leave slight curves and bends as your installation goes, so please check the gaps as you move along the installation.
  • The second point is drainage and slope. As the boards are closer side to side, your pitch or gradient should be increased with the 3mm gap side to side must be checked regularly to ensure that water drains from your deck freely and quickly; otherwise, this could create future issues with your composite decking over time.
  • If you choose the 3mm clip and unfortunately experience problems with the boards in the middle of the decking area, you risk having to lift the whole deck to enable you to access boards in the middle or at the ends. Therefore, you must pay close attention during the installation to ensure the correct expansion and contraction gaps are followed.

Overall, the 3mm clips offer a better, natural, and modern look. Constant checks are completed regularly upon installation to ensure water drainage throughout the installation process.

6mm or Plastic Clip & Hidden Fasteners

Due to the more significant gap, the 6mm or hidden fastener clip used during composite decking installation is the choice of many fitters. The 6mm clip has its pros, allowing a more significant gap for drainage and providing more room for side-to-side expansion.

The cons of using the 6mm clip from customer feedback are the finished look and more significant gaps, making it look unnatural due to the visibility of the clip. Small items can be dropped and ladies’ high heels stuck between the gaps. In addition, the joists underneath can also be viewed.
