Expert Advice On Black Composite Decking

Want to know more? Our in-house expert, Allan, gives his take on our Black Composite Decking, and we’ve selected some of our best guides to help you decide if this is the right choice for you. Check the expert tab for Allan’s maintenance secrets, including how to easily blend away scratches with a wire brush.

A Word from Our Expert, Allan:

We always hear comments like “sleek, modern, and bold” about our Black decking, but customers often ask about heat and fading. We actually filmed a live temperature test on a 27°C summer day to find out: our grey board reached 48°C, and this black board hit exactly 50°C. That tiny 2-degree difference proves you can have that dramatic dark look without sacrificing barefoot comfort.

Its sanded surface also shows minimal colour change over the years (testing at a remarkably low 1.77 Delta E), making it great for hiding everyday scuffs. Plus, the key secret we’ve learned is that because of this sanded finish, you can actually blend away minor surface scratches with a soft wire brush. It’s that combination of proven performance, real-world testing, and easy maintenance that makes it so popular.

FAQ About Our Black Decking

  • 1Can I install this black decking myself?

Absolutely! Our black composite decking is designed for easy DIY installation. Simply use the grooved edges with our hidden clip system for a clean, seamless finish. No visible screws, no splinters, no stress.

  • 2Is black composite decking safe for kids and pets?

Definitely! In fact, because black composite decking is splinter-free, slip-resistant, and doesn’t overheat like metal, it’s an excellent option for families and furry friends. However, we do recommend using outdoor rugs and footwear on hot summer days, as black composite boards can get warm.

  • 3Does black decking stain?

Yes, black decking can stain if not maintained. It is important to note that our Home Choice Black is an uncapped board. While capped boards offer a thin PE protective “layer” against spills, uncapped boards are more porous. This means grease, oils, or organic debris left for long periods can penetrate the surface. We recommend immediate cleaning of spills to keep the deep black finish pristine.

  • 4Does black decking get hot in the sun?

Yes, black decking can get warmer than lighter colours under direct sunlight. We recommend using outdoor rugs or placing furniture in high-sun areas for added underfoot comfort.

  • 5Will black composite decking fade over time?

Yes, all black boards will experience some UV-related fade. While the industry standard is often cited at 30%, our decade of experience in the UK market shows that our specific Graphite/Black formula stabilises between 15–20%.
