How to finish the edges of a composite deck is very easy. Your composite deck board will look more beautiful if you complete the edges. Completing the ends will protect your composite decking from the elements; more importantly, it will also increase grip and minimise slipping. If you have composite deck boards with unfinished edges in your home, there are several ways you can finish the deck edge.

Ways to Finish the Edge of a Composite Deck

Picture Framing

The picture framing method is an excellent way you can finish a wood-plastic decking edge.  It hides the rough edge of the deck the same way a picture frame hides a photo edge. You can finish the deck ends by attaching a framing board of about one inch thick around the edges of the wood-plastic deck. The framing board will join at the end of each of the composite deck corners to create a finished look. Also, you can use a framing board colour as that of the deck or choose a contrasting colour to make the deck pop.

Raised Fascia Boards

Another great way to finish composite deck edges is to use a fascia board. The fascia board is a vertical board that you can attach around the wood-plastic board perimeter to create a finished end.

Paint the Composite Decking Edge

Painting the composite deck ends with a matching colour as the deck is a simple way you can finish the deck ends. Painting the ends will make the decking ends look consistent with the wood-plastic composite . This method is easy; you can do it yourself using a good paint and brush or rollers. Use the brush or rollers to add some coat of paint to the composite deck ends. Ensure to use a kind paint that can withstand any climate conditions.

Glued on Veneer Cap

Another way you can cover a composite deck end is by attaching a veneer to the deck ends. You can attach the veneer cap with contact glue to the edges of the wood-plastic deck to create a uniform look.

Screw End Strip to Edges

This method is similar to the picture framing method but without the extra joist and block framing. It is more durable than a veneer and does not require the extra framing to support the WPC ends, unlike the picture framing technique. You can do this by attaching a layer of a composite board and screwing it to the ends of the decking to create a finished look.

 Vinyl Stair Nosing

Vinyl stair nosing is another way to finish composite deck ends. Composite deck owners can install vinyl stair nosing on the WPC decking easily.  A person can do this easily by rolling out the vinyl stair nosing and trim it to the required size. Then, after trimming it, fasten it to the composite deck with a screw or glue. The vinyl stair nosing creates a border around the deck as the colour of the vinyl nosing is not the same as the deck. The colour contrast created by the nosing also reduces accidental steps off the deck.

Composite Corner Trim

Adding composite corners to the edge of composite decking is a great way to cover the ends. The composite corner trim is similar to the vinyl stair nosing, but it is made of composite. Using composite corner trim to finish your deck ends will make the WPC decking look more attractive.

 Plastic Ends Caps

How to Finish Composite Deck Ends

Using plastic end caps to finish WPC decking ends is suitable for hollow cylinder wood-plastic deckings. It does not require additional framing, and it will also provide a clean look to the decking. Plastic ends caps contain small plugs that are fastened to the composite deck ends with small taps. The small taps are tapped into the holes with a rubber mallet. It holds the caps into place, thus covering the unsightly holes on the composite deck ends.

How to finish the edge of a composite deck is simple if you use picture framing to cover the board edges. You can also paint the edges, glue a veneer cap to the ends, attach a raised fascia board or add a composite corner trim to create a consistent look.
