Composite decking materials are not only durable and beautiful, but they’re easy to install as well. With various types of fastening systems, you can never go wrong with composites.

When working with composite decking materials, there are quite a few types of fastening and clipping systems that you can use. Here are some ways you can install composites to build your deck.

Composite Screws

Nails and screws are one of the oldest and most used methods of fastening decking boards. Of course, you can also use them on composite decking materials. However, when it comes to choosing from the two, screws are far better. Nails do tend to pop out of the boards, which not only damages the deck but can be dangerous as well. For this reason, screws are the prefered method.

When putting down the composites, of course, you also want to use composite screws. These screws complement the boards, which are also rust-resistant. And because composite decking materials are not prone to splitting, you can drill the screws without the risk of ruining the boards.

Of course, you can also use traditional wooden nails and non-composite screws on your composite decks. However, many don’t recommend using it.

Hidden Plugs

Another way to fasten your boards is by using screws that you can plug. With these, it’s possible to hide any traces of screws on your deck. Not only is this safer than screws alone, but also looks better. It will give your patio a cleaner and smoother look.

For this, you can either do it yourself or buy specially-designed screws. Some of the screws that you can use that have features are cortex screws. They work like ordinary ones, but they have space where you can put a small piece of the composite above the screw. It will effectively hide any traces of the screw.

Another way is by doing it yourself. However, this is harder and needs a little more experience. Of course, this is cheaper as you won’t need to buy special screws, you can use ordinary or composite ones. To do this, you will need to drill the screw deep into the boards. It will leave a small hole on the materials. Then, you will need to cut a piece of the same composite, which will fit in that tiny hole left by the screws. Afterwards, seal it with a reliable waterproof sealant.

Hidden Clips

Another popular and widely used method is by using hidden clips. These work well with composites that have indents on their sides. The clips go into the indents and are screwed down to the joists.

The fastening system uses starter clips, stopper clips, and standard clips. First, the stopper clips are attached to the base wall of the deck. Then, the decking boards are fitted into starter clips. The standard clips go into the indents of the decking boards and are drilled into the foundation. The process is repeated until the last piece of the decking board. Lastly, you’ll use stopper clips to secure the board in place.

There are different types of these fastening systems on the market. The majority of them only work for grooved decking materials. However, there are other types that work well with ungrooved composites as well. By using these types of clipping systems, you can build a stable, beautiful and safe patio.

Manufacturer’s Fastening Systems

Sometimes, the manufacturers themselves supply the necessary decking clips for their boards. It can either be similar to screws or like hidden clips. If this is an option, it’s best to consider using these instead. Why? It’s because they are designed to work well with the boards that the manufacturers make.

One example of this type of fastening is Hideaway. Hideaway is a type of fastening system that is specially-designed for Trex grooved boards. There are other brands that create clips for their boards as well. You will need to research or ask your manufacturers or suppliers.
