Picture Framing a Deck

What is picture framing in terms of composite decking features? Picture framing is a technique used to finish the edging of your decking by usually adding a different colour board around the edging of your decking.

This not only creates definition but also draws the eye to that area. Adding picture framing to your outdoor decking area can create a timeless, seamless finish for your project which most homeowners are now implementing in their own projects. This can be achieved by two simple ways such as by using a composite decking board or a composite bullnose board.

Below we have written our tips and tricks you should consider when adding picture framing to your project.

DIY Tips

You should take into account this design feature when you form your subframe, as it is essential to include double joists in areas where the boards will run perpendicular to the main decking run.

The installation of the perpendicular board and the installation of the parallel board must be considered when it comes time to fix your picture frame.

Step 1 - Installing the Frame Board

Following the standard installation methods, boards which run parallel to the main run of the boards can be installed as explained in our installation article (link). At the corners of the picture frame, these need to be a 45 degree mitred edge and must have an expansion gap of 4mm.

Step 2 - Installing the Perpendicular Frame Board

Double joists are required when the perpendicular boards run to the main decking area. Starter clips must be used on the inside of the joist when fixing this board. Ensure that the board is securely fastened by screwing the exposed groove edge into the subframe.

Step 3 - Add Trims

Some homeowners wish to add trims to finish off the picture framing edging. This is completely up to the user which design they prefer.

Hiring a Professional

We do advise consulting a professional when adding this technique into your project, however this is simple and easy to do yourself if you follow the tips above.

Maintenance

To maintain the longevity of your decking boards, regular cleaning and maintenance is required. Just like all projects and designs with composite decking boards, we advise you to clean your decking every one – two months with warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush. Make sure to remove all debris from the area before cleaning.
