Composite Decking  Reviews

One of the fastest-growing decking options is composites. Composite decking boards are part-plastic and part-wood. They have the best of both worlds. They have the durability of plastic and the aesthetic of wood. While it is one of the best decking options out there, people still doubt whether they should use composites. The reason? Its price.

While there are many advantages of using composite decking materials, they are quite expensive. But despite all of this, you might still be considering these materials. Or perhaps you already built a patio using composites. The question is, is it really worth it? Let’s find out.

Composite Compared to Other Decking Options

One way to determine whether spending more money on composite decking materials is worth it is by comparing it to other available decking options in the market. When it comes to decking options, there are three common types of decking materials. They are composites, PVCs, and woods, which comes in two types. Here are each of the decking materials that you can choose from.

  1. First one from wood deckings is pressure-treated softwood. When it comes to price, it is the cheapest among the decking materials. They can cost £15 to £30 per square meter. They are the usual choice for decking for many years now. However, it has quite a few disadvantages. Unlike composites, they are more susceptible to rotting and splintering. The chemicals that they often use are also usually toxic. They are also high-maintenance. In the end, you may end up spending more on maintenance fees. As for its life span, expect at most 15 years before needing to replace it. That is, of course, if you maintain it properly. It’s considerably shorter than average composites.

  1. The other type of wood decking materials is hardwoods. They are more durable than pretreated wood. They also don’t need to undergo chemical treatment, as they are naturally resistant to damage than softwoods. They do still need the same maintenance as softwoods, but less frequently. However, they are much more costly than pretreated materials. A square-meter of hardwood can cost from £30 to £50. They can last 20 to 30 years with proper maintenance.

  1. The other type of decking materials is PVC. Since PVC is plastic decking, they are one of the most durable out of all options. They don’t rot, splinter, or break, unlike wood. They are also incredibly easy to maintain. They do share these traits with composites. Not only that they’re the most durable, but they can also be the most expensive. However, there are cheaper options, ones made from recycled materials. Another downside to PVC is that they don’t feel and look like wood, unlike composites. As for its life span, it can last at least 25 years.

Is Composite Decking Worth it?

After looking at the other types, let’s look closely at composites. Depending on the make, composites are much more expensive than woods. A few exceptions are top-quality hardwoods, in which case the prices are quite similar.

When it comes to performance, composites can perform better than wood. They don’t need as much maintenance. You don’t have to spend money on maintenance supplies and fees. They also have the durability of plastic. They don’t rot, splinter, and warp. Moulding and fungi are not big problems with these types of materials. Because of this, you can actually save more money in the long run.

How about the aesthetic? Some composite materials look as authentic as real wood, even more. Unlike most PVCs, you can enjoy the feel and beauty of real wood without compromising the quality.

As for the life span, like PVC decking, composite materials can last for at least 25 years. And the best thing, as previously mentioned, you don’t need as much extensive maintenance compared to other materials.

So, is composite decking worth it? Yes. If you’re looking for something durable and beautiful, then it’s something to consider getting. The initial cost of these materials may be higher than other types, but in the long run, you can save more by using them. Since you won’t need special maintenance for them, you’ll cut some expenses from maintenance tools and fees. It’s definitely worth considering.
