While concrete is one of the most durable floorings you can choose from, it doesn’t stand out when it comes to appearances. If you have a concrete slab on your yard, why not transform it into something more appealing. Fortunately, there are plenty of options that you can choose. One of the options that you can consider is building a floating deck on a concrete slab.
The questions are; What is a floating composite decking? And how can you build it on a concrete slab? And why should you have one on your patio?
What Is a Floating Deck?
There are two kinds of decks; standard decks and floating decks. Standard decks are decks that are connected to a building or a house. On the other hand, floating decks, also called free-standing decks, are not attached to any building. They are “floating” or constructed above the ground. Because of this, they are relatively easier to build than standard decks. In some places and under certain conditions, you don’t need a permit to build floating decks.
Floating decks can be built on most flat surfaces, including the ground. However, to prolong the life of the deck, you will want to install it over compact sand or gravel-covered ground. Of course, concrete slabs work well as a foundation too. Installing it on top of these protects the deck from the moisture and provides excellent drainage. Now, how do you build a floating deck on a concrete slab?
How to Build a Floating Deck on Concrete?
Building a floating deck on concrete is quite easy compared to traditional decks. Here are the general steps on how to do it.
- Prepare the Concrete Slab – Before starting the installation, there are some things that you need to check. First, you will need to evaluate the quality of the concrete slab. Make sure that there are no water pooling or drainage problems. If there are any, make sure to fix them. You also need to check whether the concrete slab is flat. If it isn’t, you can either resurface to make it level. Alternatively, you can prepare concrete blocks or commercial tools to level the frame. If the slab is damaged, you will need to fix it. But if it’s beyond repair, you may need to remove it and make a new slab of concrete.
- Build the Frame – You need to design and build a frame for the deck. For this, you have a few options. One of the options is building a standard deck frame using a series of beams and joists. You will have to drill the frame on the concrete, making sure that the screws penetrate the concrete at least one inch deep. Alternatively, you can also get some post brackets. Despite being hard, concrete is very brittle. When drilling concrete, make sure you have the right tools and screws to avoid cracking.
- Install the Decking Boards – All that’s left is to install the decking boards. Make sure that you install them according to instructions. If you’re using wood, attach them using screws or nails. For composite decking materials, hidden fasteners are common. Remember to install them with proper deck board spacing in mind. For wood decks, you will need to seal it after installing. Doing so further protects the deck from moisture. Aside from decking boards, you can also use decking tiles, which are easier to install than the boards. After installing the decking boards, you have the options to make accessories for your decks, such as railings, stairs, and pergolas.
Why Should You Build a Floating Deck?
As previously mentioned, a floating deck can greatly change how your backyard appears. And on top of that, you can personalize the space to your preferences. You can enjoy it as a relaxation spot or a gardening corner. Another good thing about floating decks is that they are easy to maintain. If you use composites, it makes it more low-maintenance. You’ll only need basic cleaning items to maintain it.
Another reason floating decks are amazing is the fact that they’re not attached to your house. Any possible damage to your deck won’t affect the house, and vice versa. So if the deck becomes unstable, you won’t need to remove it from the house.
